The Non-Technical Aspects of Video Recording

The previous material on Kdenlive had to do with using the program. An entier other topic is how to produce high quality videos regardless of the software you are using.

The basic rule is that your video will be as good as the raw footage you record. Capturing the material in the best way possible gives you material that is easy to work with and best conveys your message. You want the recording to be the best possible, and they use editing and effects to organize your material and 'sand off the rough edges'.

Recording at its best involves lighting, angles, location, background, sound, and so on. The best performance by the best actor would be awful if the recording was awful. Bad lighting, poor quality sound and so on will rune an otherwise great presentation.

This does not mean you need the latest or most expensive equipment!

We will assume you have the best equipment you can manage. See the next section for some suggestions.

Equipment

Get the best qualiity HD video camera you can. Often this will be your smart phone. Many come with very high quality cameras that will do the job.

If not a smart phone, look for a digital video camera with the highest resolution, removable SSD storage, and features such as zoom.

Video cameras all come with microphones, but most are lower quality. Invest in a USB mic that will plug into your camera to capture the audio. Consider which you will need, directional or omnidirectional. Directional is best pointed at the sound source and will not capture sound from the sides as well. Omnidirectional will capture sound equally well from most directions.

Find some sort of stand for your camera. A tripod is comman, as long as it is designed to fix your camera. Smartphone need special devices to hold the camera and connect to a stand. Most other cameras have a screw hole in the bottom that screws down onto a tripod or stand to secure it.
